GEO vs AEO: are they the same thing?
Almost. Both describe making a brand easy for a machine to find, trust and quote. GEO came from a research paper and emphasises citation by generative models; AEO came from SEO practice and also covers non-generative answer surfaces.
This page exists because the vocabulary is genuinely confusing and nobody selling either has an incentive to say “they are mostly the same thing”. We do not sell a term, so here is the plain version.
Where each name came from
GEO — generative engine optimization. The term was introduced in a 2023 research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, which proposed it alongside a benchmark for testing which changes to a source made a generative engine more likely to cite it. Because its origin is academic and model-centric, GEO discussions tend to concentrate on the written output of large language models.
AEO — answer engine optimization. This one grew out of SEO practice rather than research. It predates the current wave of assistants: practitioners were using it for featured snippets, “People Also Ask” results and voice assistants before ChatGPT existed. That inheritance is why AEO is the broader label — it covers answer surfaces that are not generative at all.
The shades of difference
| GEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Academic research, 2023 | SEO practice, featured snippets and voice |
| Surfaces meant | Generative answers from LLMs | Generative answers, plus snippets, PAA and voice |
| Emphasis | Being cited by the model | Being the answer, wherever the answer appears |
| Used mostly by | Technical and research-adjacent writing | Agencies and in-house SEO teams |
| Work it implies | Identical in practice | |
That last row is the whole point of the page. If a provider tells you GEO requires a different method from AEO, ask them to name one thing they would do differently. We have not heard a convincing answer to that question.
The other names for the same thing
- LLMO / LLM optimization — the same as GEO, with the model named explicitly.
- AI SEO — usually AEO, occasionally meaning “using AI to do SEO”, which is a completely different activity. Ask which is meant.
- AI visibility / AI search visibility — the measurement rather than the optimisation. This is the clearest phrase of the lot, and the one we use when the audience is not already fluent.
- SGE optimization — dated, from Google’s Search Generative Experience before it became AI Overviews. Treat its appearance as a sign the page has not been updated.
A trap worth knowing: “AEO” in the Philippines
In the Philippines, AEO usually means Authorized Economic Operator — a Bureau of Customs accreditation programme for importers and exporters, established under the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act. It has nothing to do with marketing, and it owns the acronym locally.
We have not yet measured how strongly that association shows up in AI answers: the Philippine question is not one of the eight in our published audit, so we have no stored run to cite for it. It is on the list for the next one. Until then, treat the acronym clash as what it is — a documented fact about the local vocabulary, not a measurement of ours.
If you are selling or searching locally, “AI search visibility” is the phrase that works. What that means for Philippine businesses in practice is on AI search visibility in the Philippines. It illustrates a general point: the vocabulary to use is the one the engines already associate with your market — and the way to find that out is to ask them, which is a measurement we have not yet run here.
Which term we use
We are called Bungad AEO, so we have picked one — but the name is a bet on which label the market settles on, not a claim that the other is wrong. In writing for people who are not already fluent, we say “AI search visibility”, because it is the only one of these phrases that explains itself.
If you are buying: the label tells you nothing. Ask which engines are queried through an API and which are checked by hand, ask who writes the pages, and ask to see one real report. Those three answers separate providers far more reliably than which acronym is on the homepage.
The work, under either name
- Answer the real questions directly, in the first two sentences, on a page titled as the question.
- Put the specifics — prices, coverage, what you do and do not do — in plain text on your own domain.
- Keep structured data matching the visible page, and no more than the page says.
- Earn accurate mentions on the third-party sources the answers already cite.
- Measure monthly against a fixed question set, and publish or record it either way.
Whichever acronym you use for that list, it does not change. Longer versions of each step are on how to get mentioned by ChatGPT and Perplexity and what AEO is.
Common questions
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
Very little in practice. GEO, generative engine optimization, came from academic research into getting content cited by generative models and keeps that emphasis on the model’s written output. AEO, answer engine optimization, grew out of SEO practice around featured snippets and voice assistants, so it also covers answer surfaces that are not generative. Both describe the same core work: making a brand easy for a machine to find, trust and quote. Vendors use them interchangeably and you should read them that way when buying.
Where did the term GEO come from?
From a 2023 research paper titled ‘GEO: Generative Engine Optimization’, which proposed the term along with a benchmark for testing which content changes made generative engines more likely to cite a source. That academic origin is why GEO discussions tend to focus on citation by large language models specifically, rather than on featured snippets or voice results.
Which term should I use?
Use whichever term your audience already uses, and say plainly what you mean the first time. GEO is more common in technical and research-adjacent writing; AEO is more common among agencies and SEO teams. If you are hiring or buying, ignore the label and ask what is measured and who does the work. One local exception matters: in the Philippines, AEO usually means Authorized Economic Operator, a customs programme, so ‘AI search visibility’ is the clearer phrase there.
Does the difference change what I should do?
No. Under either name the work is the same: answer real questions directly and early, put specifics in plain text on your own domain, keep structured data matching the visible page, earn accurate mentions on the third-party sources engines already cite, and measure monthly against a fixed question set. If a provider claims GEO requires a different method from AEO, ask them to name one thing they would do differently.
